The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department is very pleased to receive the donation of a patrol boat for their lake patrol program from the Syracuse Lake Association Inc. and with the assistance of Griffith’s Wawasee Marina in Syracuse, Ind. Thanks go to both of these fine organizations for their community minded donation.
This patrol boat was purchased with donations made to the Syracuse Lake Association Inc. by their membership, equipment discounts by Griffith’s Wawasee Mariana, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Marine Patrol Assistance Grant annually obtained by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
With this donation, the Syracuse Lake Association Inc. has made a lasting commitment to the safety of the citizens of Syracuse Lake and all citizens that enjoy one of the finest lakes of Kosciusko County. Syracuse Lake Association Inc. is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization that seeks to preserve and protect Syracuse Lake.
The mission of S.L.A. includes cooperating with local law enforcement officers to promote Indiana’s boating laws and encourage the safe use of Syracuse Lake. S.L.A. President Becky Fox wishes to recognize that S.L.A. member Edward Phillipp was instrumental in coordinating the donation of this boat.
The donation was also made possible by the continuing community support of one of the areas foremost marinas, Griffith’s Wawasee Marina in Syracuse, Indiana. The Sheriff’s Department and S.L.A. wish to thank Terry Griffith, his dedicated family, and staff for their efforts that made this donation possible.
The boat is a Boston Whaler brand boat with a 90 Horsepower Mercury outboard engine. The boat is equipped with all the required emergency police equipment and is a fully functioning law enforcement patrol vehicle.
While this boat will be stationed at Syracuse Lake, the donation package includes a boat trailer allowing this vessel the ability to respond to any lake in the county should an emergency ever arise.
The Sheriff’s Department maintains a very active lake patrol program. The program is a cooperative effort between the local lake property owner associations and the department. Lake Patrol Officers patrol the lakes in the county during the summer recreational boating season and are strongly focused on promoting boater safety and education.
The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department is a charter participant in the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Marine Patrol Assistance Grant. Since 2005, and including the 2010 boating season, the Marine Patrol Assistance Grant has returned $199,000.00 to the citizens of Kosciusko County for lake patrol efforts. These grants are part of the larger Indiana Department of Natural Resources Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) Grant program which is funded by annual boat registration fees.

A Cromwell man currently in the Kosciusko County Jail has been linked to starting a fire earlier this month that destroyed an Enchanted Hills residence.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department detectives have concluded their investigation on an early morning house fire located in the northeast portion of Kosciusko County. KCSD Detective Jon Tyler stated that information has been provided that Scott Allen Baldwin, 27, Cromwell, was involved in a 5 a.m. house fire on May 10, at 9702 East Pixie Parkway, Cromwell.
During the investigation, it was determined that Baldwin had set a fire in a closet at the Pixie Parkway residence to “stay warm” but it eventually grew out of control at which point he fled the residence.
Baldwin is currently incarcerated at the Kosciusko County Jail awaiting transportation to the Indiana Department of Corrections on three convictions. Baldwin also has a pending court case after a May 17 arrest by the Kosciusko County Drug Task Force on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine precursors.
Detectives have forward information regarding the residential fire investigation to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office for the determination of possible arson or criminal recklessness charges against Baldwin.
