An investigation is under way at the Westville Correctional Facility where an inmate from Warsaw was found dead in his bed on Sunday.
The LaPorte County coroner says Shawn Milton, 32, of Warsaw, died of multiple blunt force trauma sustained to his entire body. Several inmates have been sequestered while the beating death is investigated.
Milton arrived at Westville on July 16 from the Kosciusko County Jail to begin an 8-year term for dealing methamphetamines.
Detectives of the Indiana State Police and the prison’s Internal Affairs Division are investigating Milton’s death.

gurtha, I don’t know who you were referring to about that comment about Shawn being some male child’s father but I hope the comment wasn’t to me as I have been just a friend to Shawn that’s all. I know who my children belong to and so does the father of my children.
Thank you to all of you that stand with me and love my brother Shawn. He was in the end, the kind of man that I can say that I hope that I am. I love my brother and the way that he fought for what he believed in. May God’s wrath be to all of you that judge him and God bless those who stand with me.
Some people have alot of nerve.
It kills me to hear people crying now for Shawn. you for one. Now he is your son’s daddy? say what? The only reason you are wanting him to be your baby’s daddy is for money, you and your family think you can get something for nothing as usual. Family of Shawn’s beware of this snake in the grass, she will be there always with her family with there hands out, He has 2 girls provin. Some people make me sick.
To Shawn’s Brother,
I was there Monday at Shawn’s funeral service and cried a lot. I still can’t believe it has happened to him. I heard so much about his family from him. He loved you all very much!
He had talked to me before he moved from the community I live in near him and he told me how he was going to change his life for the best. I was so happy and looking forward to the positive change for Shawn and his daughters. I’ll tell you his littlest daughter just ripped my heart in two when she came up to me and looked at me with pure innocence and said, “My Daddy Shawn is dead” as she pointed to Shawn. I was able to say to her, “I know sweetie I’m so sorry” as I held my emotions in until she was out of range and I cried.
All the ignorant people who put judgment on Shawn for his mistakes need to clean their closets before judging him. Shawn would have given his shirt off his back to someone who needed it. I know I only knew him for a little over a year but let me say this, he was one of the few people I could honestly say, I’d trust my life with him. He was definition of a TRUE FRIEND! He loved everyone that loved him and I never knew him to go out of his way to start trouble but he definitely didn’t tolerate people causing trouble either.
Shawn, until we meet again, you will be missed for sure.
To all of Shawn’s family, please know I’m thinking of you all and hoping you find the peace you all deserve dealing with the loss of Shawn. May the 7 inmates who done this to him and the guard who did nothing to prevent this all be haunted with the thought of what a great man they have taken from so many who cared for him especially his precious daughters.
so many are so quick to judge others lives…but are the last to judge their own. i would love to have everyones faults that commented negatively to this laid out in a news report for us to judge. but thats still too fair, because shawn isnt here to defend himself. NOBODY that makes bad choices in life deserves to die like this. and NOBODY in that prison has the right to take anothers life. i hope that gaurd lives the rest of her life regretting her selfish choice. to all of you who think he “deserved” this or feel the need to judge what kind of father or husband he was… take a step back. look in a mirror, i am positive you are far from perfect, and judging by your comments, i can guarantee NONE of you are model citizens. model citizens are people who care about others lives. thats none of you. i pray for all of you to find your way like shawn did.
This is my brother that some of you are taking time to judge. I ask that you just read this before you continue to do so. He took a dealing charge because he was offered a plea with a lesser sentence because of the way that he was busted for it. He did not deal it. He was only in Westville for 9 days before he was beaten to death by 7 other inmates because he didn’t want to be affiliated with there gang because he had gotten right with Jesus and changed his life. He loved his children and his family. The guard that “found him” was somehow persuaded or intimidated to turn a blind eye. She knew what was happening to my brother. Just a random fact: out of 37 female applicants to westville last year 17 of them were in relationships with inmates. The prison will pay for this one way or the other and those men will answer to god almighty for what they did.
Boy I’ll tell you what.. There seems to be a lot of ignorant people who would comment in a negative way about another human being losing his life to violence like this. Yes, Shawn made a mistake dealing with the drugs but he didn’t make a mistake that made him get a death sentence. The people who did this to him need punished and sentenced with murder. Now two precious little girls are without their father and the youngest girl is just going to be 3 yrs old I believe it is. Not to mention a mother, father, brother have to bury their son, brother. Shawn was a gentle speaking man who would lecture kids he thought were heading down the road he was getting ready to face. He told them to get their head out of their behinds before it was too late. He was not joining any gang in prison like stated here on this site by someone. He wasn’t like that.
Shawn knew what he was locked up for was wrong and he told me he was going to get on the right path while locked up and when he came home he was going to be the father he should have been to his daughters. I honestly think he finally figured out his daughters were so very important to him when he knew he was getting 8 yrs. He loved his daughter’s with his whole heart and regretted putting them little girls through all he has. He didn’t deserve to be killed by the ignorant one’s at the prison. I hope those guys watch over their shoulders the rest of their lives. They will be judged when their days are over. Shawn didn’t have a chance to show everyone he was going to change his life for the best for his daughters.
Rose, not sure where you heard that.No need to join Aryan when you are affiliated with GD.He was set up because he helped take down some major players. They were waiting on him to get there.Once he chose to do the RIGHT thing,he was not protected.I feel for his wife, child, and family.A child WE will have to support by our tax/social security dollars.Had you met him,you would understand he was human and made a mistake,NOT the kind of mistake that should have cost him his life.He was never anything but respectful when I spoke to him.(I met him a few times but didn’t know him well)It is sad that so many of you think you are so perfect.Heaven forbid anyone in your circle of family and friends make a mistake.May God have mercy on YOUR souls.
I heard he was being initiated into the Arian (sp?) Brotherhood. Looks like this fine citizen wanted to continue his crimes in prison as well. I will never believe he got what was coming to him because I don’t believe anyone deserves to be beaten to their death BUT at the same time, it is clear from day one he had no intentions of being rehabilitated into a man accepted into society. The beating was part of a brutal initiation that obviously went way too far. Most likely an accident. I suppose he could have wanted to join as a way to feel protected and part of a group that wouldn’t be messed w/ while he was locked up. Sad thing is, he died for a group of gang bangers that wouldn’t have died for him. Whatever his reason for wanting to join their gang, a series of horrible decisions in life led him to meet his maker and left a family w/o their loved one.
thanks for the update I had ready it it another media outlet and wanted to make sure you had the updated info for your site to
Oh my gosh! I cant belive that some of you feel the way that you do.. This is a man that had a child and was choosing to do meth. instead of spending time with his child.. and instead he was out getting high and probluly exposeing this to his child also.. to create, maybe another juvinle deliquant.. (for us taxpayer tho give a home.)to follow in his footsteps.. prison is where you put these people and if you dont want to go there. then stay away from drugs and the things that put you there in the first place… the choice was his.. he knew the consiquences and this is what he chose.. What goes around comes around.. Now hes not there to influance his child,GOD
knows best.. Everything happens for a reason.. NOW maybe his child has a chance, than to have a Meth head father ..
Meth will destroy your life and eventually take your life one way or another. It is a tragedy. Prayers to his family.
This young man did make some poor choices, and was sent to pay for those choices. He was not given the death sentence that he received at the hands of others. My heart goes out to all of Shawn’s family members and friends…He was a person and I’m sure suffered a painful death. and to You BEN… What will we do without this model citizen? A mother and father will grieve the rest of their lives.. Children will grow up not having their father..Other family members will remember the good times, share stories and grieve…. Here’s hoping that no one you love will ever do wrong…..
Ben, I am glad that you are so freaking perfect. God forbid someone make mistakes. But did he deserve to DIE while paying his debt to society? NO! I hope noone you care about ever makes any mistakes. Thank God not everyone is a closed minded jerk like you.
PhoenixRising, I heard that Westville had an executive meeting today to discuss how to respond to you holding them responsible…oh wait, they dont’ care what you think. Here’s some crazy advice. Don’t sell drugs, don’t do drugs, and don’t break the law. If you follow those three simple rules, I can guarantee you that your chances of being beaten to death in prison will be 0.
Been to Westville, you need to keep your mouth shut, follow the rules, and slowly blend in. Do not follow this, get the crap kicked out of you, that simple. I am not saying that what happened is ok by no means, just saying he picked the wrong one to open his mouth to.
What are we going to do now that we lost this fine model citizen? ……. come on people its not like he was in jail for helping old lady’s cross the street!
I am so sad to hear about this incident. I feel deeply for his family. I however have become so disgusted with Westville Correctional facility. A close family member of mine just got released from their with similar charges and had gotten brutally beaten in their to the point of losing his sight. How are these acts happening without anyone noticing? Just because the people in their have been convicted of a crime doesn’t mean they don’t deserve protection. They don’t have the choice to get up and walk away from people bullying or abusing them like we do on the outside, so I truly feel they should be making an even bigger effort to protect them from violence such as this. I just can’t understand how we are rehabilitating individuals sent to prison if their are acts such as this .. and to think the person that did this may never be known , such as with my family member, and at some point they might even be back out on the streets walking around with us like nothing they did ever happen. DISGUSTING!
My heart goes out to this young mans family, and the pain and heartbreak that they must be going through, I cannot imagine. He had only been at Westville for 10-days!!
This is just SO wrong; it is messed-up, big time! Prisoners have human rights, and they have a right to safety and protection. Just because he was incarcerated, that is no reason that this young man had to die at the hands of other inmates. It is WRONG – and personally – I HOLD WESTVILLE RESPONSIBLE.
Yes, he obviously made some bad choices but now his children will forever suffer from this loss. R.I.P.
He was only there 10 days. I am sure they was waitin for him. You can’t live by the sword and not expect to die by the sword. I feel for the parents no mother wants to bury there son..
Shawn you will be missed by many, especially your daughter! Hope this is a lesson learned to all think about your choices, he mad some bad ones, but did not deserve this
Did a guard turn a blind eye, deaf ear, to the battery he endured prior to his death? This is sad!
RIP Shawn! You will be missed!
