LAGRO – Indiana Conservation Officers and the Wabash County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the death of an Andrew’s fisherman whose body was found floating next to the dam at Salamonie Lake near Lagro, in Wabash County.
The body of 76-year-old Robert Bitzer of Andrews was spotted by two IDNR employees at about 3 p.m. Monday. The body was floating near shore 100 yards east of the control tower.
From information given to investigators by witnesses working near the dam, Bitzer was seen parking his vehicle in the Corps of Engineers parking lot Monday morning and carrying his fishing gear down a path toward the dam. Witnesses also said that they had not seen any other fishermen in that area all day.
Investigators found all of Bitzer’s gear, including his fishing poles, undisturbed in close proximity to his body.
Bitzer’s body was removed from the scene and taken to the Wabash County Hospital where an autopsy will be performed to determine an exact cause of death. Foul play is not suspected.
